Love affairs and Songs

Every time it comes to speak about love affairs, it isn’t so simple. Because

many feelings and emotions are involved. And for that reason, we have to

treat carefully the argument, whatever it might be the detail related to it.

And, like everybody knows, love is undoubtedly the main source of

inspiration for many artists, with no exception for the songwriters!

But the fact is that there are times when what we felt for a person, maybe a

great love enriched by passion and admiration, is not enough to keep our

beloved with us forever…

So the mix of sensations we can go through bring us to suffer certain times

and, in the end, to acquire the awareness that, after all, the story we lived

was worthy.

Important is always to keep as much as possible a neutral point of view

about the relationship we had, because doing so we can get the whole range

of shades born from it.

And here it is the pivot of the matter: what if instead of writing a moving and

romantic love-song we transfer all our disappointment into a lyric which, with

the right base, allows us to get rid of frustration, delusion and in general all

the array of the “negative” feelings??

This is the case of my song Spoiled girl. Probably better than a

psychoanalysis session, putting into words what I felt, when I had to admit to

myself that the relationship with a Japanese girl was over, likely due to the

reason that she hadn’t ever loved me for real, was incredibly liberating!

It was the occasion to turn something unpleasant to my favour, possibly for

the first time in my life. Of course in the earlier years I had already written

some songs inspired by love affairs that I lived first-hand.

But, while on those occasions the outcome was a bunch of songs where the

typical bond suggested an endless love or a great sorrow accompanied by

regrets, melancholy and sadness, in Spoiled girl the result steered to an

unexpected form of snark mixed with biting wit.

…leading listeners, verse by verse, to a wisecracking finale very little

politically correct!!

Therefore, it is hardly surprising that even the entire process of making the

musical base was heavily influenced by the meaning, and the intention as

well, of the words the lyrics is made up of.

Because that’s the text power, its ability to bend rhythm, melody, harmony

and sound to its will.

A will clearly belonging to the lyrics’ authors who have in mind the goal of the

song and, some times, the target audience too…
